化学式HCOONa·2H2O，分子量104.04。密度1.919g/cm3。 稍有甲酸气味。易溶于水和甘油，微溶于乙醇。熔点253℃(无水物)，有毒。强热时分解为氢和草酸钠。用做化学分析试剂，以测定砷和磷的含量，还用作消毒剂、媒染剂等。用碳酸氢钠跟甲酸反应，使溶液保持碱性，除去Fe3+、过滤、在滤液中加入甲酸，使溶液呈弱酸性后，蒸发、结晶即得本品。是生产甲酸和草酸的中间体，也用于生产二甲基甲酰胺等。
